C-Crete at SFO: World’s First Major Airport with Cement-Free Concrete

November 2024, approximately 35 cubic yards of C-Crete’s proprietary, 100% Portland cement-free concrete were poured into two critical corridors at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). These were the first pours of their kind at any major international airport, marking a significant shift after two centuries of Portland cement dominance in construction.

The decision to use a cement-free mix was driven by a shared goal to drastically reduce the embodied carbon in one of the most emissions-intensive materials in infrastructure – concrete – without sacrificing performance.

The mix also reached a 28-day compressive strength of 6290 psi, which surpasses conventional standards and validates the structural capabilities of sustainable alternatives. For the C-Crete team, this moment represented a long-anticipated leap. After more than 15 years of R&D, this project placed their technology at the center of a global transportation hub. This was a milestone not just for the company, but for the future of construction.

C-Crete extends heartfelt thanks to all the partners who made this achievement possible:
