World’s First Zeolite-Based Cement-Free
World’s First Zeolite-Based Cement-Free Concrete
November 2023, Seattle, WA
November 2023, C-Crete Technologies successfully poured the world’s first zeolite-based concrete, a cement-free and near zero-emission alternative to traditional concrete. Approximately 20 tons of the innovative mix were used for a slab-on-grade outdoor foundation and sidewalk steps at a building site in Seattle.

This pour demonstrated that it is possible to move away from carbon-heavy, limestone-based Portland cement without compromising on performance or cost. Zeolite, the binder used in this mix, is a naturally occurring non-carbonate rock rich in silicon and aluminum, two of the most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust. It offers a compelling path toward large-scale decarbonization of the built environment.
C-Crete’s zeolite-based concrete achieved compressive strength exceeding 5,000 psi, and met/exceeded ASTM standards such as C1157, validating its mechanical and durability performance. The product flows and pumps like conventional concrete and matches its cost, while eliminating the CO₂ emissions typically associated with Portland cement. In addition, the material captures CO₂ from the air during curing, further enhancing its environmental profile.
Zeolite is just one example from C-Crete’s growing suite of cement-free concretes, each engineered to deliver high performance and low carbon impact using abundant, regional materials. This achievement marks another step forward in enabling net-zero construction without sacrificing structural reliability or economic feasibility.
C-Crete thanks all partners and contributors who helped make this milestone possible, including Building Transparency, Don Davies, Allan Paull, Larry Busch, John Cherne, and Martin Josund.
